A Retrofit Assessment is the first and most critical step in upgrading your home or property to be more energy efficient. Conducted in line with the UK’s PAS 2035 standards, it provides a detailed picture of your property’s current condition, energy usage, and ventilation performance. This forms the basis of any whole-house retrofit plan.
Before installing insulation, ventilation, or low-carbon heating systems through government-funded schemes, it’s essential to fully understand the property’s condition and performance.
A Retrofit Assessment is important because:
- The right energy-saving measures can be identified
- Risks such as damp or poor ventilation are properly addressed
- All improvements are safe, effective, and built to last
- Full compliance with PAS 2035 and TrustMark standards is achieved
What does a Retrofit Assessment Include?
Your assessment will be carried out by a qualified Retrofit Assessor and covers three key areas:
- RdSAP Energy Assessment
An EPC-style survey to determine your current energy performance and carbon emissions. - Condition Survey
Checks for structural issues, damp, mould, or any defects that might affect the installation of retrofit measures. - Occupancy Assessment
A look at how you use your home – heating patterns, occupancy levels, and energy habits – to ensure upgrades suit your lifestyle. - Ventilation Assessment
Ensures that existing and proposed ventilation meets Building Regulation Part F to avoid poor indoor air quality or condensation issues.
What Happens Next?
Once the assessment is complete, the data is handed over to a Retrofit Coordinator who will:
- Create a Whole House Retrofit Plan
- Prioritise improvements based on cost-effectiveness and risk
- Ensure all works are delivered to the correct standard
Measures recommended after a Retrofit Assessment
- External or internal wall insulation
- Loft or roof insulation
- Floor insulation
- Draught-proofing and airtightness
- Heating system upgrades (e.g. air source heat pumps)
- Solar PV and battery storage
- Ventilation improvements
Who needs a Retrofit Assessment?
- Homeowners wanting to reduce energy bills
- Social landlords and housing providers
- Landlords upgrading for MEES regulations
- Other property managers
- Anyone applying for funding under ECO4, GBIS, or SHDF
